Using the Food Label to Track Calories, Nutrients, and Ingredients

  • The Nutrition Facts label and the ingredients list on packages of foods and beverages are useful tools that can help consumers learn about what is in foods and beverages.

USDA Food Patterns

  • Provides recommended daily intake amount at all calorie levels for each food group.

Released in 2011, the guidelines emphasize three major goals for Americans:

  • Balance calories with physical activity to manage weight;
  • Consume more of certain foods and nutrients such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fat-free and low-fat dairy products, and seafood; and
  • Consume fewer foods with sodium (salt), saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, added sugars, and refined grains.
